CENTRE FOR GENDER ISSUES IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (CEGIST)

About Us

The Centre for Gender Issues in Science and Technology (CEGIST) of the Federal University of Technology, Akure was established in January 2009 following a directive of the National Universities Commission to set up Entrepreneurship Study Centres in all Nigerian universities. The Centre which started as an entrepreneurship and gender issues Centre, now focuses on gender issues only with a re-structured mandate to promote gender equity and entrepreneurship empowerment towards the reduction of poverty and creation of wealth in the context of gender mainstreaming.

CEGIST addresses issues relating to the gender gaps and disparities in social, cultural and economic opportunities between male and female sexes. The Centre contributes immensely towards providing a sound entrepreneurial drive which takes gender sensitivity into cognizance to fuel economic growth as well as produce graduates well groomed for self-sustenance and national development.

Vision

To become a leading Centre for gender mainstreaming in the Nigerian University System towards assuring organisational effectiveness and improved productivity.

Mission

To promote gender equality in science and technology within the Federal University of Technology, Akure and the community at large.

Our Programmes

Some of the key programmes of CEGIST include the hosting of capacity building workshops and seminars on gender issues, enlightenment and advocacy, consulting and counselling amongst others (See Programmes). The Centre is open for partnerships with the government, NGOs, Civil Society Organizations, and other relevant stakeholders.
